Peak Rail prepares for action-packed Mixed Traffic Gala

by

Peak Rail will stage its Mixed Traffic Gala over the weekend of September 19-20, bringing together steam and diesel traction for two days of intensive heritage railway action.

The Derbyshire heritage line says the event will feature locomotives from its home fleet alongside a special visiting engine, with passenger and freight trains running throughout the weekend.

Visitors will be able to travel behind a range of steam and diesel locomotives, with day tickets allowing passengers to hop on and off services throughout the day.

An intensive timetable is planned, with frequent departures alongside traditional freight workings designed to recreate the sights and sounds of the working railway.

There will also be turntable demonstrations at Rowsley, yard shunting demonstrations and opportunities to visit locomotive footplates at Matlock Riverside.

Brake van rides will give visitors the chance to experience the railway from a goods guard’s perspective, although places will be limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors will even be able to get behind the controls themselves through Peak Rail’s ‘Diesel Shunter Driver for a Fiver’ experience, which offers the chance to drive a diesel shunter along a dedicated section of track.

An on-train heritage bar will serve local ales, refreshments and hot, cold and soft drinks during the event.

Tickets cost £18 in advance or £20 on the day for adults, while children travel free. Unaccompanied children are charged at the adult rate.

Peak Rail says the full timetable will be published closer to the event and advises that all locomotive appearances remain subject to availability, contract and fitness to run.

The Mixed Traffic Gala takes place at Peak Rail on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026.
