The magnificent seven

They were only little engines, but boy were they ‘big’ for haulage! For a long time, could there ever have been seven more elusive locos for passenger work than Haymarket’s dual-braked, non-boilered merry-go-round Class 26s? Steve McFarlane recalls his quest to ride behind 26001-007.

Rail blue remembered

Because so many of us grew up with it, the BR rail blue era remains one of the most popular periods in railway history. Kim Fullbrook presents a selection of images from 1980 to 1982, when everything was different – the multiple units, coaches, signalling and locos themselves.

This month’s feature is from the lens of Leicester-born photographer and author John Stretton. His interest in railways began in September 1955, and when travelling to school from Syston to Loughborough Midland he was intrigued by several compatriots watching the trains and scribbling down the numbers of locos seen during their journeys.
